José Miguel is an Ingeniero in Environmental Management, and has taken post-graduate courses in Seed Technology and Biodiversity Management.
He is in charge of the UTPL germplasm bank of the Ecological Institute. Specialising mostly in forest species, his current project is entitled “Morphological studies on the medium and long term ex situ storage of seeds and tissue cultures, focusing on native species from the dry forests and mountains in southern Ecuador”.
Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja
The Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL) was founded by the Ecuadorian Marist Association (AME). It was officially recognized by the government of Ecuador under Executive Decree 646 on May 5th, 1971, and was established as an autonomous legal entity as recognized by the “Modus Vivendi” Agreement between the Holy See and the government of Ecuador, based on the Church’s regulations in its organization and government. On October 27th, 1997, the Diocese of Loja transferred indefinitely to the “Idente Association of Christ the Redeemer, Idente Missionaries” the operation of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, to be conducted with total autonomy and in accordance with Idente charisma.
UTPL is a legal and autonomous organization which is non-profit and co-financed by the Ecuadorian State. With more than 20,000 students UTPL provides superior pre-graduate and post-graduate education in its on-campus and distance study modalities. Their variants are: traditional distance, semi-distance and virtual in four areas of knowledge: technical, socio-humanistic, biological and administrative.
